On
the occasion of its 140th anniversary, and marking 30 years since the
adoption of Additional Protocols I and II, The Netherlands Red Cross hosted
the conference 'PROTECTING HUMAN DIGNITY IN ARMED CONFLICT' on 19 October
2007, at the Peace Palace in The Hague. The conference aimed to review
the relevance of international humanitarian law for the protection of human
dignity in modern armed conflict.
Our
Secretary General Dr. Cees Breederveld, Chairman of the day, welcomed more
than 200 participants. The keynote address was delivered by H.R.H. Princess
Margriet of The Netherlands, who called on all those present to combine
efforts to make a difference in the protection of human dignity.
During three sessions, military, legal and psychiatric experts shared their views and experience in recent armed conflicts. By approaching the law from an interdisciplinary perspective, insights in inter alia behavioural factors that influence the protection of human dignity in a situation of armed conflict will be presented. The conference explored in particular the role of combatants and other entities, such as humanitarian organizations and the media, in protecting human dignity. The conference findings were presented by Dr. Fabricio Guarliglia.
We look back on an a successful day of new insights and stimulating debate.
